Council looks to purchase land for ball park parking
By Tiffany GreenHOLLY POND –– Mayor Herman Nail announced at July’s town council meeting the town is in the process of buying land adjacent to the ball park.
“The council had previously decided that if that land came up for sale, the town would buy it,” Nail said.
The property is located at 456 New Hope Road in Holly Pond, in front of the ball park.
“We have had plans for that property for the last 15 years,” Nail said.
Nail said because of the park expansion over the last few years, more parking is needed.
“The park has grown so much that we don’t have room for parking,” Nail said. “This will be great for parking and will accommodate a lot more people.”
The 1.5 acre plot with a two-story house was bought for $68,000.
“All the paperwork is in the lawyer’s office, and hopefully we can close it out in a few days,” Nail said.
Nail is still unsure of what the town will do with the house, but said he will do whatever is best for the town.
“We may have to take it down, but because of the historical value of the home, maybe we can save it,” Nail said.
In other business, the council:
‰ Heard a report from Nail on the police jurisdiction being extended. He will contact the co-op to determine the amount of people who will be included and the price they will pay.
‰ Council member Carol Hill gave the parks report and said the ball season is over and said the tournaments went well.
‰ Mayor Nail reported the senior building roof is complete and A-1 Siding will complete the siding next week.
‰ Holly Pond resident Chris Chambers ask the council for permission to have access to the old water tower to put on antenna for broadband Internet access. Nail said he would have to talk to the town attorney for further information.
‰ Town deputy Vincent Hart reported his car is currently in the shop having the radar gun and camera installed. He recently had the tires replaced and will install the computer as soon as it comes in. The cost of the radar gun and the camera was $7,114, paid for by the town.
‰ Heard from Rich Patsios, pastor of Holly Pond United Methodist Church, who invited the council to join his congregation on Aug. 23 for a special day honoring local businesses.
‰ Four minors gave an apology for trashing the town park. The mayor and council agreed no charges will be filed if the boys agree to help the mayor clean up the park and the roadsides in the town. “I appreciate you coming before the council and being honest with us and the deputy. We all make mistakes, that’s part of growing up. When we do make mistakes, we have to try to turn them around,” Nail said. “I’m proposing y’all work for me for a few days.”
‰ Council member Bartee Bryan reported the striping has been finished at the school and it will hopefully help out with traffic when school starts.
‰ Nail told the council the town did not get the stimulus grant money for the street repairs.
‰ The town of Holly Pond is taking applications for a waste water treatment plant trainee. Applications may be picked up at the town hall on Thursdays between 1 and 5 p.m.
‰ There will be a special called meeting Monday, July 13 at 7:30 at the town hall to discuss job descriptions for all town employees.
