Wreck blocks I-65 traffic for two hours
By Patrick McCrelessLocal authorities worked non-stop to clean up a wreck that completely blocked southbound traffic on Interstate 65 for two hours Monday.
Cullman County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Tony Quick said the wreck occurred around 12:18 p.m. near the 293 mile marker on Interstate 65. Southbound traffic was re-opened around 2:20 p.m.
Quick said two 18-wheelers collided in the southbound lane and one overturned, which caused the traffic jam.
“It’s leaking ... we have a HAZMAT team cleaning up a fuel spill,” Quick said Monday about the flipped vehicle.
According to Alabama State Trooper reports, the 18-wheelers were driven by Eddy McKenzie, 65 of Columbia, Miss. and Michele Cochrane, 47 of Folsom, La. Reports did not indicate which person drove the overturned truck.
Nobody sustained injuries during the wreck.
However, at least two elderly motorists suffered some health problems as a result of being stuck in traffic for two hours, Quick said.
“A couple of elderly people need some medical attention ... they are having some panic attacks,” Quick said.
Quick said ambulances were dispatched to assist those in need.
Troopers are still investigating the cause of the wreck.
