CULLMAN —
Children attending Thursday's "Born to READ" event at the Cullman County Public Library got a special treat from some local guests.
As part of United Way of Cullman County's Day of Action, the nonprofit agency teamed up with the library for the Summer Reading Program in an effort to encourage children of all ages to read.
"Our three focal points are income, education, and health," United Way Executive Director Kasey Kearce said. "Education is a building block for the future. We feel it's important for kids to read during the summer, and feel this was a good way for us to give back to the community."
Circuit Court Judge Greg Nicholas, Miss Wallace State Sara Beth Drake, Karla Brauer of Tutor Doctor, Tina Buchanan of Alabama Credit, Wade Harbison of the Cullman Park and Rec Department, as well as two Girl Scouts from the Vinemont troop took turns reading to the group.
Those that attended received at $10 gift card from Deb's Bookstore and a t-shirt.
"We are grateful to our sponsor, Premier Bank, for enabling us to do the give away," United Way Marketing Director Jacqueline Schendel said.
The Cullman County Lions Club was also on hand providing free vision screenings.
The library's reading program continues next week, where from Tuesday through Thursday, children will be introduced to ordinary people who do extraordinary jobs in our community. They will also see how heavy equipment is used to meet our daily needs. A spokesperson from the Soil and Water Conservation Departments, the Cullman Electric Cooperative, and the Cullman County Road and Sanitation Department will be on hand to speak and give demonstrations.
