CULLMAN —
The Alabama Army National Guard unit from Cullman has been called into active duty, along with several units statewide, and soldiers are expected to ship out this weekend.
Approximately 140 Cullman area soldiers will be shipping out, among 600 service members statewide. A departure ceremony for the Cullman soldiers is slated for 11 a.m. Friday at the Cullman County Fairgrounds.
“Departure ceremonies are a chance for families and local supporters to see soldiers off, as they head to their mobilization site,” National Guard Army public affairs officer Major Mike Tomberline said.
Following the Friday ceremony, troops will head to a mobilization site this weekend before traveling overseas — likely to Afghanistan — to serve.
With the Cullman-based Charlie company being called up to active duty, local VFW member Ken Brown noted the local battalion has a rich history dating to the Civil War.
“They were known as 4th Alabama regiment in the Civil War, and went to the 167th in World War I and II, then Korea, etc.” he said. “They’ve been around a long time.”
In addition to the Cullman company, soldiers from Sylacauga, Pelham, Valley, Talladega and Oxford will also be shipping out this weekend.
