CULLMAN —
Drivers traveling on Alabama Highway 157 near Cullman Regional Medical Center should schedule a few extra minutes into their travel time starting today.
According to Alabama Department of Transportation Division I engineer Johnny Harris, ALDOT plans to transform the bridge at Lake Catoma into an intermediate one-lane bridge for short amounts of time during the day over the next several weeks, in order for materials being used in the construction of the new bridge to be unloaded.
"We've got nine drill shafts to pour over the next few weeks, so periodically, the bridge will be down to one lane as needed in order for the materials to be brought in," Harris said.
In December of 2011, Gov. Robert Bentley signed off on funding to replace two bridges on Highway 157 — one at The Cullman Stockyards, and the other at Lake Catoma near the hospital. The project, which began in late February, is estimated to cost $6.5 million
Harris said the project is subject to take 225 working days to complete, which is around 18 months. However, he said depending on weather, it could possibly stretch out to two years.
