Cullman shuts down for big game By Tiffany Green The Cullman Times While Alabama hoped to hold off the Tigers’ Iron Bowl winning streak, local merchants were quiet as most people stayed home to watch one of the biggest college football rivalries in the state.
Although most stores were silent, it was quite the opposite for Dominos Pizza. “For the most part, we’ve been fairly busy today,” said Jay Allison, store manager. He said by 4 p.m., they had made over 120 pizzas and had over $5,000 in sales. “We expect it to get busier as the game progresses,” he said. He said on a typical day with a major sports event, Dominos will have a total of $8,000 to $10,000 in total sales. “We have found out that many people like to stay home and watch the game and have a lot of food delivered to them,” he said. Papa Johns manager Jennifer McClure said the day has been crazy. “It’s been very busy,” she said Saturday afternoon. “We expect a lot more today.” She said normally her business makes a lot of deliveries, but this year has been different with more people opting to pick-up. “We have had a lot of people picking up before the game and it has continued throughout the game,” she said It was a different story for the Belk store in Cullman. Belk manager Cathy Patterson said she thought business was very slow, especially for a Saturday afternoon. “Traditionally we know when the Iron Bowl starts business is going to drop off dramatically,” Patterson said. She said everyone would rather be watching the game than shopping.
