Change is in the air for the City of Cullman.

Following Tuesday’s runoff election, every incumbent running for municipal office was beaten by a newcomer.

The only returning city council member will be Garlan Gudger Jr. in Place 2, who ran unopposed.

For the office of mayor, Max Townson defeated incumbent city council member Ernest Hauk with 1,660 votes and 56.1 percent, compared to Hauk’s 1,297 votes and 43.9 percent.

In the midst of congratulations and hugs with his family, mayor-elect Townson said he was honored to win.

“This is just such an honor,” he said. “I just want to do what’s right for the community. I want to thank the people of Cullman for all their support, and especially my family.”

Townson also expressed his admiration for his fellow candidates.

“I also want to thank all the candidates who participated in these municipal elections,” he said. “It says a lot about our community, and that the people care about this city.”

Incumbent city council member Wayne Walker was beaten by Andy “Coach” Page for the Place 1 city council seat. Page garnered 1,631 votes and 55.9 percent. Walker earned 1,286 votes and 44.1 percent.

“I’m just excited,” he said. “I have a lot to do. We’ve got a great city and we’re just going to try and make it even better.”

Gudger, the last remaining city council member from the previous administration, said he is glad the elections are over.

“It’s just an honor to be back,” he said. “At least all of the uncertainties are certainties. We’re just going to have to continue to lead this city in the right direction and make the right decisions.”
