Senator Vivan Figures, candidate for the U.S. Senate, was the honored guest at a luncheon hosted by the Cullman County Democratic Party Thursday, Sept. 25, at the All Steak restaurant. Representative James Fields sponsored the luncheon. Approximately 50 people attended, including Judge Deborah Bell Paseur, candidate for the Alabama Supreme Court; District Judge Kim Chaney; Revenue Commissioner Kay D. Williams-Smith; Dr. Vicki Hawsey, president of Wallace State Community College; and former District Attorney Len Brooks. That night, more than 225 Democrats gathered at the McGukin Civic Center for a night of food, catered by Williams Barbeque, speeches and lots of fellowship as they get set for the final 40 days before the General Election on Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2008. Preston Miller and Austin Monk spoke the those in attendance. Rep. Tom Drake introduced one of the speakers for the evening, House Majority Speaker Seth Hammett. Chris Drake introduced the emcee for the evening, Marsha Folsom. Folsom introduced local candidates. Incumbent Kay D. Williams-Smith, candidate for Revenue Commissioner; Norman "Pete" Tucker, candidate for County Commission Chairman; and, Cindy Angle, candidate for the County School Board, representing West Point and Harmony schools. Also, statewide candidates, Kimberly Drake, candidate for Judge of Court of Civil Appeals; Judge Clyde Jones, candidate for Judge of Criminal Appeals, Place 1; and, Nicholas Sparks, candidate for U. S. Representative of the Fourth District. Each candidate spoke and encouraged everyone to get out and vote. Folsom introduced her husband, Lt. Gov. Jim Folsom, Jr., who was one of the featured speakers for the evening. Folsom recognized local elected officials in attendance: Rep. James Fields, Sen. Zeb Little, Rep. Ron Grantland, Circuit Judge Don Hardeman, District Judge Kim Chaney, Probate Judge Leah Patterson-Lust, Sheriff Tyler Roden, Circuit Clerk Robert Bates, Colony Mayor Earlene Johnson, Hanceville Mayor Katie Whitley, newly-elected Colony Mayor Morris Fitts and newly-elected Cullman City Council member, Dr. Jenny Folsom, vice-president of Wallace State Community College. Also, attending and recognized were former Probate Judges Tom Burleson and Betty Brewer. Folsom commended the Beat Committeemen who conduct the elections. She recognized the Democratic Party officers, Chairman Keith Kugler, Vice Chairman Jana Shelton, Secretary Jo Burrow, and Treasurer Peggy Doss. A silent food auction was held with items baked by memebers of the the Democratic Party. Approximately 25 carry-out plates were donated to the Victims Services Organization.
