BAILEYTON Johnny Dyar won the election to mayor of Baileyton, receiving 72 percent of the votes to defeat Joseph Golden. Three of the five Baileyton town council seats were decided in Tuesday’s election. Glenn Burden received 51 percent of the votes for Place 4, defeating Donald C. Vanzandt — who received 47 percent of the votes. Windell Calloway won the election for Place 2 on the Baileyton town council, while Roy Shield won the election for Place 5. There could possibly be two runoff elections on Oct. 7. According to Baileyton town clerk Ruth Rose, the town’s 30 absentee ballots have not been counted. This could possibly create a runoff between Billy McElroy Joseph “Jack” McGee for Place 5 on the town council. There will also be a runoff for Place 1 on the town council. Incumbent Wendall Guthrie received 40 percent of the votes, while Walker Mead received 30 percent. COLONY Morris Fitts easily won election to Mayor of Colony over incumbent Earlene Johnson. Fitts garnered 103 votes, or 74 percent, compared with Johnson’s 36 votes. Also in Colony, Donnis Leeth beat incumbent John Turner in a landslide for Place 4 on the town council, 109-28. However, Town Clerk Gwendolyn Purifoy said there was some confusion because Leeth was registered to vote in Jefferson County and had to vote using a provisional ballot. Asked what that means, Purifoy said, “I don’t know. Tomorrow at noon we’ll take the ballots to the registrar’s office. If it’s a countable vote, he (Leeth) will be pronounced the winner.”
