Rep. Robert Aderholt gave Cullman Kiwanians an update on republicans’ plans to lower gasoline prices during their meeting Monday.

Aderholt said the general impression among the American people is that Congress is satisfied with the status quo and does not want to do anything about gas prices. He noted however, that republicans have been very vocal about the issue by trying to bring their American Energy Act up for a vote.

“The House (of Representatives) went into recess Aug. 1,” Aderholt said. “Republicans stayed on the floor and demanded the speaker of the house call the House back into session to have and up or down vote on the act.”

Aderholt said the act is a three-point plan to wean the United States off foreign oil.

“The goal is energy independence from the Middle East,” Aderholt said.

The first part includes expanding the country’s oil supply engaging in off-shore drilling. Aderholt said the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge has an estimated 10.4 trillion gallons of oil.

“There could be more supply there than what we currently import from Saudi Arabia,” Aderholt said.

The second part of the act includes greater conservation of resources while the third part stresses using more alternative energy sources.

“It’s called the all or above plan,” Aderholt said. “It’s caused a lot of friction between republicans and democrats.”

Aderholt also touched on the subject of illegal immigration during the meeting.

“Illegal immigration is a major component of national security,” Aderholt said. “I believe the laws on the books need to be enforced.”

Aderholt added that true immigration reform cannot begin with amnesty for illegal immigrants.
