davidl@cullmantimes.com Bill R. Maddox, a former Cullman city councilor who served a single-term in office from 2000-2004, passed away Monday at Trinity Medical Center. Funeral services for Maddox with be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Cullman Heritage Funeral Home with internment following at Cullman Heritage Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. “He loved serving and helping people,” said his daughter, Kimberly Hansen, who added Maddox also “loved being on the city council.” Along with serving the city of Cullman well, Hansen said Maddox also served his family. “He was a wonderful father, husband and grandfather,” she said. Councilor Woody Jacobs said he became “good friends” with Maddox during their time together on the council. He also said he learned valuable lessons from him. “Bill taught me a lot of times to look at all sides of an issue,” Jacobs said. “He would challenge you to look at the whole realm of a decision.” Other city councilors who served with Maddox — Ernest Hauk and Wayne Walker — could not be reached for comment before deadline Tuesday. Mayor Donald Green said Maddox was especially interested in the Cullman Fire Department for which he served as its committee chairman. “He loved his community and he was very sincere in his beliefs and the things he did to try to make Cullman a better place,” Green said. Maddox ran for a second term in 2004, but was defeated by Garlan Gudger, Jr. In addition to serving on the city council, Maddox worked locally as a businessman, working as a manager at Sears from where he retired before going to work at Loomis Fargo.
