The phrase “Well, it’ll eventually happen,” could be heard being murmured from a group of dozens of local anglers Monday night at the Cullman city council meeting.

The possible ordinance regarding an increase in boat motor power allowed on Lake Catoma was tabled yet again at the evening meeting.

Local anglers — at least 3,700 judging by a petition being floated on the matter — are pulling for the change, which would see the boat motor horsepower limit raised from 10 to 25.

Councilman Woody Jacobs commended the fishermen for attending the meeting.

“Last meeting we tabled the boating issue and I’m not sure if that’ll come off the agenda,” he said. “I appreciate you gentlemen coming out — you’ve been very diligent.”

At last month’s meeting, Councilor Ernest Hauk noted the board would like to deliberate upon the issue before officially deciding on a course of action.

The council also approved a new traffic signal upgrade at the intersection of Cherokee Avenue and Lee Avenue, as well as an extension of Lee Avenue. Mayor Green noted the extension would add another exit to Heritage Park, and come out in front of Chick-Fil-A.

The expansions are estimated to cost approximately $30,000, and will be handled by Clyde Hooten & Sons Construction.

The council also:

‰ Approved a resolution to participate in the 2010 Year of Alabama Small Towns.

‰ Read and approved the minutes from the June 23 and July 14 meeting.

‰ Approved a request to purchase a hand-held GPS for the fire department for $195.

‰ Approved a request to purchase a digital sound meter for the fire department $83.60.
