Motorcycle rider killed on I-65

A motorcyclist was killed early Tuesday on Interstate 65 after he apparently lost control of his vehicle and struck a guard rail.

Cullman County Coroner Gary Murphree pronounced Earl Mitchell, 46 of Arley dead at the scene.

Murphree said the fatality occurred at approximately 8:38 a.m. near the 301-mile marker in the northbound lane of Interstate 65.

“He lost control of the motorcycle he was riding and struck one of the guard posts with his body,” Murphree said.

Murphree added that Mitchell was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash and that no other vehicle was involved with the incident. Information on why or how Mitchell lost control of his motorcycle was unavailable.

The case is still under investigation by Alabama State Troopers.

According to state trooper statistics, 352 vehicle fatalities have occurred in Alabama so far this year. Of those fatalities, 32 occurred on interstates. Alabama had 439 reported vehicle fatalities in 2007.
