TGREEN@CULLMANTIMES.COM Two dogs found beaten and bloody in a bag of dog food are ready for adoption according to Cullman Area Animal Welfare Association president Linda Morgan. “They need special homes and people who can give them time and attention,” said Morgan. Sonya Mathis, director of foster care and adoption for CAAWA, has been caring for the animals. “The puppies had a rough start to life but are precious dogs and need a forever home,” said Mathis. The dogs are hound mix and have developed medical problems as a result of the abuse. One dog named R.C. is totally blind. The other named M.C. may have a slight neurological problem because his depth perception appears to be off, said Mathis. “These are special needs dogs,” she said. In March, Cullman County sanitation employees found several puppies in a dog food bag at a residence along Alabama Highway 278 near the Blount County line. Two of the puppies were dead. One has already been adopted. “They had been knocked in the head with something like a hammer, I guess to kill them,” sanitation employee Jamie James told The Times in a previous story. A report was filed with the Cullman County Sheriff’s Department, but no one has been arrested for the crime. According to the Code of Alabama. a person is guilty of animal cruelty if he or she killed or injured an animal without good cause. In Alabama, animal cruelty is a Class B misdemeanor.
