davidl@cullmantimes.com Hanceville Elementary School garnered a $10,000 grant Tuesday that will be used to make the school’s campus a safer place. Money from the Community Impact Grant, was provided by the LP Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Louisiana-Pacific Corporation. The funds will be used to pay for a fire alarm system upgrade for the school’s kindergarten and first grade building. The grant is designed to fund projects in communities where Louisiana-Pacific facilities are located, according to an LP press release, which also said four to six grants are distributed across North America each year. Jeffrey D. Harper, principal of HES, could not be reached for comment Tuesday. However, according to the corporate press release, Harper said, “This money will enhance our endeavor to protect our children daily.” Kevin Campbell, the manager of the Hanceville plant that manufactures oriented strand board, a material used in home construction, said Harper told him the fire safety system is expected to be installed before school starts for the 2008-2009 school year. Campbell also said Harper told him the funds will cover the cost of the alarm upgrade. “He said, ‘Oh, this $10,000 will take care of the fire system,’ ” Campbell said. About 140 individuals are employed by the Hanceville plant. Campbell said he is one of the many workers there who either attended the school or have children who are HES students or alumni. “I went to elementary school there myself,” Campbell said.
