PATRICKM@CULLMANTIMES.COM A Cullman County grand jury recently indicted a Hayden man for manslaughter — nearly a year after he allegedly killed a man while driving under the influence. Cullman County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Daniel Joseph Pickle, 29, Tuesday on the indictment, which was issued on June 30. The indictment stemmed from an Aug. 3, 2007 vehicle collision that resulted in the death of Malcolm Baty, 66 of Hanceville. According to Alabama State Trooper reports, the two-vehicle wreck occurred around 9:15 a.m. on County Road 35. The reports state that Pickle, who was driving a 1991 Oldsmobile, allegedly slammed into Baty, who was driving a tractor. “The man (Baty) was on his way to or from the fields,” said Cullman County Coroner Gary Murphree. “He was killed instantly.” Pickle sustained various injuries in the crash. Reports indicate Pickle was allegedly traveling at a high rate of speed and was under the influence of alcohol and a controlled substance. Reports also note that items found in Pickle’s vehicle were allegedly stolen from a residence in Gardendale not long before the crash. Authorities were not pursuing Pickle at the time of the incident. Pickle was incarcerated at the Cullman County Detention Center on a $50,000 bond. Manslaughter is a Class B felony, punishable by up to 20 years in prison.
