4-car accident sends woman, son to hospital

A woman and her son were airlifted to Birmingham after a four car accident Monday in Hanceville.

Thirty-three year old Tommie Sanders and her son Kenny Sanders, 2, were sitting at the intersection of Highway 91 and Highway 31 when their 1994 Saturn was struck by a 1996 Plymouth driven by 20 year-old Ashley Strain.

Strain was entering the intersection from behind Sanders and could not stop in time, according to Hanceville Police Department reports.

Sanders was airlifted to UAB Hospital and her son was sent to Children’s Hospital. Both had serious injuries.

Also involved was Penny Brooks, 42, driving a 2002 Ford Taurus and Terry Jackson, 55, driving a 1994 Ford F-250.

Brooks, Jackson and Sanders were all stopped at the intersection when Strain approached from behind.

Hanceville Public Safety Director John Duchock said Sanders and her son were the only injured parties.

“Everyone else declined treatment,” he said.

Sanders is still at UAB Hospital and is currently stable.

“I’m sore, bruised ... I have multiple fractures and other injuries but they say it looks all right, though,” Sanders said of her condition.

“Kenny was at Children’s (Hospital),” she said of her son. “He had a broken leg and a bump on the head.”

Everyone involved was wearing a seat-belt, and Duchock said drugs or alcohol were not a factor in the accident.

Duchock said the accident also caused minor traffic problems in Hanceville.

“It tied up traffic and we had to close (Highway) 91 down for about 45 minutes.”
