Police seek help in hit-and-runs

By Patrick McCreless
The Cullman Times

Cullman Police are requesting the community’s help to solve two Thursday vehicle hit-and-run cases, one of which resulted in injuries.

“A reward is offered for information that leads to an arrest and conviction in the cases,” said Capt. Max Bartlett of the Cullman Police Department. “And you don’t have to give your name when you call.”

Police reports indicate the hit-and-run with injuries occurred at approximately 3:49 p.m. on Cherokee Avenue near Industrial Drive. The victim drove a 2007 GMC Envoy while the suspect drove a red Ford pickup truck.

“She (the victim) was rear-ended by the red Ford pickup,” Bartlett said. “The pickup fled the scene.”

Paramedics transported the victim to Woodland Hospital for treatment. Information concerning the severity of her injuries was unavailable.

The victim’s vehicle received an estimated $10,000 worth of damage.

“We assume the truck sustained a lot of damage to the front end,” Bartlett said.

Bartlett noted that his investigators may have some video evidence in the case.

“We have not had a chance to review that yet,” he said.

The other hit-and-run occurred at approximately 12 p.m. at the intersection of Cherokee Avenue and County Road 222. The suspect drove a small black vehicle, which was possibly a Nissan.

“The victim was traveling north on Cherokee, stopped to turn, and the suspect hit the vehicle in the rear and the driver side,” Bartlett said. “He kept going and didn’t stop.”

Bartlett said the victim’s vehicle received $500 worth of damage, adding that the suspect’s vehicle was probably damaged as well.

According to the Alabama Code of Law, the driver of any motor vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to or the death of any person, or in damage to a motor vehicle, shall immediately stop his or her vehicle at the scene and wait for law enforcement. Leaving the scene of an accident is a Class A misdemeanor unless the incident resulted in an injury, in which case the crime is a Class C felony, punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

Anyone with information concerning the two hit-and-runs are encouraged to call the Cullman Police Department at 775-7170 or 734-1434.
