Cancer event topples goal

Officials: Relay a huge success

With the statistics from Relay For Life 2008 now in the books, Cullman County Development Coordinator Gidgett Overton said it was one of the best years they have ever had.

The event raised approximately $315,000 for the American Cancer society, and more than met the fundraising goal set by organizers.

“We did good, just so good,” Overton said. “We actually went over our goal.”

Over 8,000 people attended the all-night event, and more than 300 cancer survivors made it out, as well.

“We definitely had a lot of people there,” Overton said. “It was such a wonderful time.”

Though early weather reports seemed dire, it never developed into a serious problem.

“It was such a beautiful night. We got a teensy bit of rain, but that was about it,” she said. “We had Charles Baker keeping a really close eye on it for us, though, just in case.”

For Overton, the real highlight of the night came at the 10:45 p.m. Fight Back presentation.

“We think it was just wonderful,” she said. “It gave people an opportunity to think about what they are going to do with the rest of their lives.”

The various fundraising teams also helped make this year even more memorable, Overton said.

“The teams were just fabulous,” she said. “We are so proud of everyone that was involved.”

The group from Axsys Technologies won it all, having raised $30,000, the most from any team this year.

Good Hope High School was the top high school team, and Parkside won the elementary division.

Merchant’s Bank won the best small business team, and the Spirit Award went to the Circle of Hope team.

The best new team award went to the Cullman Power Board team, and First United Methodist topped the church competition.

Auburn Alumni were the best civic club or organization team.

Overton said Relay organizers try to keep the event fresh with new games. In that tradition a new competition held this year turned out to be a huge success.

”The big hair contest was an absolute hit,” she said. “Folks just loved it.”

Though most things went well, Overton said there was one issue the staff received complaints about.

“We had too many kids left unattended again this year and too much nonsense,” she said. “Next year there will be a lot more people on duty to look out for that.”

Overton said with 2008 behind them, local Relay For Life organizers are now looking to the future — and also looking for more help.

“We’re looking forward to next year now,” she said. “And we always need new volunteers for teams and just anyone who wants to join.”
