Relay for Life kicks off Friday

The Cullman Times

Come one, come all this weekend to Relay For Life said Cullman County Development Coordinator Gidget Overton. Cullman’s Relay For Life event is set to begin at 7 p.m. Friday night at Heritage Park. Festivities will last through the night until 7 a.m. Saturday morning.

Overton said she is ecstatic for Relay For Life to get here.

”We are so excited and it feels so good,” she said. “Anticipation and excitement is definitely in the air.”

Rep. James Fields is the special guest and will hold the invocation at the opening ceremonies. Cullman Mayor Don Green will also be speaking.

The Survivor’s Walk starts moving at 7:45 p.m. with the luminary service follwing at 9 p.m. in the garden area.

“The luminary service will be a great time for reflection,” Overton said. “It will be in appreciation of cancer survivors and caregivers.”

The talent show starts at 9:35 p.m. A three minute time limit is required for each participant.

At 10:45 p.m. the Fight Back presentation, with guest speaker Alison Barksdale, will begin at the main stage and last about 15 minutes.

“Alison is a cancer survivor, and she is just awesome,” Overton said.

Overton said Relay Idol, a spoof on American Idol, begins at 11 p.m. and should be a real treat.

“That’s going to be a whole lot of fun,” she said.

A hula-hoop contest starts at 12:15 a.m., a Big Hair competition at 12:40 a.m., a water relay at 1:45 a.m.

Saturday morning breakfast will be served at 6 a.m. The closing ceremonies with Blake West and Mike Ledbetter will begin at 6:30 a.m.

While no admission is charged to be part of the event, Relay For Life is the main fundraiser for the American Cancer Society and donations will be accepted. Various teams will also have fundraisers on-site, including food and raffles, for guests to buy to support the organization. At 6:45 a.m. the total funds will be announced by Overton. The target goal is $325,000.

“I just want to encourage everyone to come out this year,” Overton said. “It’s going to be a great experience.”
