Veterans to be honored at open house for local bed and breakfast By Patrick McCreless The Cullman Times When Grady Jones decided he would raise a large American flag during the open house ceremony of his bed and breakfast, it quickly occurred to him that he could do much more to honor his country and those who fought for it.
“I don’t think we do enough to show appreciation to our veterans,” Jones said. “This is my way of saying thank you.” Jones said he will hold a special tribute to all veterans and those soldiers still in harms way at noon Saturday at Grady’s Bed and Breakfast, located by Smith Lake. The bed and breakfast’s open house ceremony will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jones, who is a U.S. Air Force veteran, said in addition to raising a large American flag, the ceremony will feature a member from the local American Legion Post who will speak about veterans. Four members of the Cullman National Guard honor guard unit will also be present. “It’ll be kind of a moving time,” Jones said. Jones said the bed and breakfast, which will officially open for business on April 1, is the home he has lived in for the last three years. Jones said he decided to change the home into a bed and breakfast after he retired from the insurance business. “I wanted something to do. ... Plus, I’m a people person,” he said. Of the home’s three floors, the top and bottom will be used to house visitors. Jones said the bottom unit has a full kitchen as well as a queen size bed and a futon. “It overlooks Smith Lake and a waterfall,” Jones said. The top unit has a kitchenette, a king size bed and an open view of the lake. All three floors have bathrooms. Jones said he is in the process of installing a gazebo with an outdoor fireplace as well as a seven-person hot tub. Grady’s Bed and Breakfast is located at 306 County Road 85 in Crane Hill.
