STAFF WRITER FAIRVIEW — At a recent meeting of the Fairview town council, officials took a few moments to remember former councilman Hubert Phillips, who died Friday, Jan. 2. “Mr. Phillips stood for what he believed in, and he walked the walk,” Councilman Eugene Pinkard said. “I looked up to Mr. Phillips.” Phillips served on the council for more than 25 years. He was on the council until this past October, when he decided not to run again, at the age of 91. He was the custodian at Fairview school for many years and worked at Walker Brothers in Baileyton for 38 years. He was also one of the first members of the Fairview Volunteer Fire Department and served on the Cullman County Park Board in the 1970s. He was currently serving on the Cullman Electric Cooperative’s Operation Round-Up board. “I miss him right now,” said town clerk Debbie Shedd, as she looked at the empty chair he sat in. “He’s always been a fine man,” council member Norman Dye said. “He served as the grand marshall of our parade when he was 90 and was really proud of that,” Mayor Randall Shedd said. “We will miss him.” The council filled two vacant seats. Place 3 and Place 4 were vacant because no one qualified by the deadline to run, Shedd said. “Paula Edge was willing to serve again, so she was reappointed. Another seat was left vacant from Mr. Phillips,” he said. The council appointed Dale Seals to fill Place 4. Shedd said, according to Alabama law, if no one qualifies to run by the deadline, the council will declare the vacancies at one meeting, and at the next meeting the council can appoint someone. In other business the council: ‰ approved a $1,000 grant for the bluegrass festival. ‰ approved paying monthly bills.
