Senators should do right thing on immigration

CULLMAN — Congress must protect the path to citizenship for the 11 million undocumented immigrants currently living in the United States and pass reform this year.

Overwhelming majorities of Americans support a pathway. Our immigration laws are broken, and 11 million people need our help finding a solution.

I've personally seen families torn apart when the only breadwinner (mostly, but not always the father) is snatched from the family and the children American citizens are forced on the federal dole.

Some extremists are still suggesting self-deportation. We all know that's not realistic. We need real solutions and rounding up 11 million people or asking them to leave is inhumane and fixes nothing.

That's why I hope my senators will do the right thing and vote for the Senate's immigration bill.
