ADDISON —
Obama is having great difficulty selling his socialist national health program to Republicans and Democrats alike. Consistent polling indicates nine of 10 Americans have health coverage and an overwhelming majority of them are happy with it.
No one is leaving the U.S. for brain surgery anywhere else and while our medical system isn’t perfect, it is one of the best in the world. Obama says 46 million Americans are uninsured. Now we know that 10 million of those are illegal, are not Americans and are not entitled to anything, much less health insurance supported by taxpayer dollars.
That leaves 36 million uninsured. But, 14 million of those qualify for Medicaid, so they don’t count either, leaving 22 million. Nearly 18 million of those make incomes over $50,000 a year and either can afford some coverage or choose not to have it. That leaves 4 million Americans uninsured out of a population of 307 million.
I don’t know about you, but, as part of the 90 percent of Americans happy with their coverage, I don’t favor changing the system for the other 10 percent. I have a daughter who chose to work in a job for six years out of college that offered no insurance benefits.
It was her choice. None of us owed her automatic coverage because of her career choice. I have a granddaughter, whose part-time job, out of high school, offered no benefits. Many young people, in good health, think they can get by with less insurance and more I-phones. When she decided to get a real job, she got health insurance benefits from day one. If she can, anyone can.
This debate isn’t about health insurance coverage, it is about more government control over our lives. If you don’t have health insurance, get a green card or get a real job. It’s time to move on to the next subject.
