Responding to Blaylock’s decision
This letter is in response to the District Attorney’s decision to dismiss the felony theft of property indictment of the Cullman County Grand Jury against former Hanceville Municipal Clerk of Court, Darlene Coker. The following points are essential:
‰ There was never an agreement between the former mayor and city council and Coker not to prosecute.
‰ The only agreement was to keep the reason for Coker’s resignation confidential.
‰ At the time she resigned, Nov. 28, 2006, the city had only preliminary information about the amount of missing court funds.
‰ The full extent of missing funds was not established until the state examiners completed their audit of municipal court records in July 2008, more than a year and one-half later.
‰ The present mayor and city council know the agreement does not mention the word “prosecute.”
‰ The agreement is being used as a lame excuse not to follow up on a grand jury indictment.
‰ When The Times ran the story of the distict attorney’s motion to dismiss, the newspaper did not attempt to obtain comment from the former mayor.
‰ The district attorney says justice is being served. How can this be justice when some crimes are prosecuted, but other crimes, committed by persons “well connected” walk?

Disregard for the law
In the past few weeks, I have heard that citizens have witnessed Zeb driving himself around the city and county of Cullman. I hope that’s not true, because it would show a blatant disregard for the law.

Hospice part of health solution
There’s a lot about health care reform in the news these days. Barack Obama’s call for an overhaul of our nation’s health care system has triggered a national debate on what works and what doesn’t, including how Medicare dollars are spent. It seems like an appropriate time to highlight a part of our health care sector that works, specifically hospice.

Open letter to Cullman legislators
It has come to our attention that the Alabama Senate has passed Senate Bill 606 to allow increases in the expense allowances for the mayor and city council of Hanceville during their terms of office. This bill will now be coming to the House of Representatives for consideration.
