Letters to the editor July 9

Leave the children at home

I want to say something to the people of Cullman: If you're going to the movies, leave your young children at home! I recently watched Superman in the theatre and a woman with an infant and two young children came in and sat down in the seats below me. The infant obviously didn't appreciate the incredible surround sound technology, as it screamed and cried everytime something exciting happened. Actually, the baby cried even during the quiet scenes. Now, I can see taking your young children to see "Cars" or "Over the Hedge," as it is a movie geared towards children, but come on. Superman, King Kong and War of the Worlds are all movies marketed towards a more adult audience but there were still little kids yappin' and crying during those movies, too.

I'm also tired of hearing parents whine about not getting to go out and do 'fun things' because they have children. Guess what? You knew there were going to be sacrifices when you decided to have young 'uns. Not getting to go out and party like you're single isn't my problem. But you're making it my problem (and everyone else in the theatre) when you bring your precious little ones to the movies and 'tune them out' when they start crying. The same goes for church. If your baby is crying, stop being lazy and take them out of the sanctuary.

People come to church to hear the Gospel, not "Whaaaaa!" Hate me if you want, but somebody needed to say something.

Thanks to fire and rescue

I would like to say a huge "thank-you" to the Vinemont Fire Department and Rescue Squad for all their hard work and kindness. On July 3rd, a huge tree in my front yard fell onto my house and blocked the road. All the people who came out to help worked so hard to remove the tree and clear the road. They also made sure I was OK and that my house was safe and secure. They did all of this in the heat, followed by a lot of rain.

I also want to thank the 9-1-1 operator who stayed on the phone with me through all of this and helped calm me, as I was panicked.

Thanks to all of you so much, may God bless you.

Democrats can't catch a break

The Democrats just can't catch a break! The Iraqis now have a government, Abu Musab has assumed room temperature, Karl Rove isn't going to jail, Patrick of Kennedy is whacked out on drugs, a Democrat Congressman has cash in his freezer, Abu Musab's replacement is also killed, consumer confidence is up in spite of high gas prices, Bush is pursuing a multilateral approach (a Democrat favorite) to Iran and North Korea, unemployment is low and job creation is high, the economy is booming, Dems are fighting over what their war strategy should be (how about "let's win) they can't agree on a catchy slogan for the election, Al Gore's new film is a flop, while Ann Coulter has the number one book in America, the Dems defeated an amendment to ban flag burning, they lost two Senate votes on cutting and running from Iraq, Bush won Senate confirmation of a military officer to run the CIA and more conservative judges, Bush got a big Wall Street Star to come aboard as his new treasury secretary, the New York Times is self destructing over aiding the enemy in wartime, the Dems lost a special Congressional election in San Diego and Bush's poll numbers have gone from 31% to 39% in one month. And, this is only July! Karl Rove has to be smiling. He can't hear that fat lady singing yet, but she's in the Rose Garden warming up!
