Town makes donation to school

By Trent Moore

With school systems across the state facing cuts due to the sluggish economy, the town of Dodge City has offered a helping hand to one local school to help teachers purchase supplies.

“These children are our future and we have to help them,” Dodge City Mayor Tawana Canada said.

Stephanie Kauffman, a representative from the Good Hope Middle School PTO, asked town officials if they would be interested in helping the school at a Thursday night town council meeting.

Kauffman said the teachers are in need of numerous different supplies to get through the year.

“They just need the basics,” she said. “A lot of things you would think they already have, such as copy paper, print cartridges, pencil sharpeners, pencils and things like that.”

Town council member Anthony Todd said he would like the council to support the school.

“I’d like to see us give a $1,500, one-time donation to help with supplies,” Todd said.

Since many Dodge City children attend the school, council member Murray Lowe agreed the town should help.

“This is a good thing, because a lot of kids in this area attend Good Hope,” he said.

The council voted unanimously to donate $1,500 to the school.

The council also:

‰ Held a first reading for a 37.5 ton, four-axle weight limit on County Road 262 and 263. The town plans to post signs at the roads, noting a $500 fine for breaking the limit.

‰ Approved plans to change the name of Park Road to Lion’s Club Trail, because the local Lion’s Club donated money to build the road in the past.

‰ Approved $1,200 to have a town Web site built, which will include a town calendar and eventually a business listing for the town.

‰ Approved plans for town clerk Vicki Ogletree to take up to eight $30 computer classes.

‰ Approved $6,800 to remove some cat tails and willow trees from the town sewer’s sewage pond, due to the fact it has created a chemical imbalance.
