School construction project OK'd

By Trent Moore

GOOD HOPE — Work to improve campus roads and construct a new bus barn

is currently under way at the Good Hope Middle School campus.

The county school board has recently approved approximately $28,000 to

build a new bus barn and storage building at the campus.

Approximately $13,000 worth of maintenance department bids were

approved with Walker Brothers for building supplies to construct the

new buildings. A $14,640 bid from WWB Contracting was also approved

for labor to frame the structures.

The bus barn and storage building work ties into a larger traffic plan

for the school.

Complaints from parents and community members about heavy traffic last

year led county school officials to look into a new traffic layout

that will hopefully improve the situation.

The plan calls for the repaving of some of the old roads, an adjusted

traffic flow plan, moving the current bus barn and creating more

parking areas in and around the school campus.

The traffic project is being funded by a $250,000 incentive bond

acquired for the school system by Alabama Sen. Zeb Little (D) and

Representative James Fields (D). The funds can only be spent on the

Good Hope project.

“That all ties in to the traffic project out there,” Cullman County

Board of Education Superintendent Hank Allen said. “Those funds had to

be spent on that project.”

Good Hope Middle School Principal Wayne Weissend said work is

currently under way, though he is not sure exactly how long it will

take until construction is complete.

“We haven’t got everything moved, but they’re working on it,” he said.

“They have the pad poured and the (bus barn) building going up, and

they have to move the fuel tanks.”

Weissend said a new sidewalk has also been created, along with new

gravel to level out some of the deeper pot holes.

“They’re making room for everything and they’re working on it,” he said.
