Economy puts Vinemont sports complex on hold
By Tiffany GreenVinemont Mayor Melba Patton said a proposed sports complex is still
in her town’s future, it may just take a bit longer than anticipated
to build.
“We are standing still on it,” Patton said. “We don’t have anything
yet to start moving forward.”
Patton said one reason for the standstill is the uncertain economy.
“We are moving forward, but very slowly,” Patton said. “I think
everyone is feeling the economic downturn.”
The town owns 32.5 acres off Hwy. 31, just north of the Vinemont Post
Office. Officials plan to build a sports complex with four or five
softball/baseball fields on the property.
Patton and town officials have been planning the project for the past
12 years.
“We do have our engineer hired, but we are sitting on hold,” Patton
said. “We have no definite dates of when we will begin.”
Patton also said residents have been taking advantage of the new
storm shelters during recent bad weather.
“I have had several people to tell me they appreciate it,” Patton
said. “Children have said they now have a safe place to go. We are
very proud of it.”
The town received a 75/25 federal matching grant for $98,000 for two
storm shelters. One is located behind the Vinemont Fire Station and
another is located at the Providence Fire Station. The storm shelter
can hold 86 people sitting and up to 110 standing and is designed to
withstand F5 tornadoes.
Vinemont is the first town in the county to have a storm shelter.
In other business, the council:
‰ Passed a resolution to become members of the North Central Alabama
Regional Council of Governments (NARCOG). The town will pay a yearly
fee of 35 cents per capita.
‰ Approved a town limit sign to be placed at the Cullman Area Career
Center.
‰ Announced the Vinemont Scout Center will upgrade the restrooms to
be handicap accessible.
‰ Gave permission to Drew Heatherly, from Scout Pack 227, to put a
