Lowe joins Dodge City town council

By Trent Moore

The final spot on the Dodge City town council was filled Thursday night when local resident Murray Lowe was appointed to council seat place 2.

The position became available after long-time mayor Perry Ray stepped down due to health concerns in May and former council president Tawana Canada was appointed mayor, leaving a vacant council seat.

Lowe, who has been a frequent attendee at town council meetings, has also spent many years with the Dodge City volunteer fire department.

He said he is excited for the opportunity to further serve the town.

“I’m looking forward to being a part of things here,” Lowe said. “I just want to see the town grow the good way ... and move forward into the future.”

Mayor Tawana Canada said she believes Lowe will be an excellent addition to the town’s leadership.

“We were impressed by his ideas and willingness to want to work with the council,” she said.

Lowe ran for town council seat place 1 in the 2008 election, but was narrowly defeated by Jason Burney for the spot.

The council also approved Anthony Todd as the new council chairman, replacing Canada.

The town plans to discuss nominations for a vice-chairman at the next regularly scheduled meeting. The idea of the council having a vice-chairman comes from a recommendation by the Cullman Emergency Management Agency to establish various levels of command in case of an emergency while the mayor and council president are unavailable.

The council also:

‰ Approved up to $500 for 10 hours of mowing service for town roads, to be provided by Winosa Services. “That (grass) is growing high enough to become dangerous soon,” Todd said.

‰ Approved $150 to purchase signs for the town park, which will display park rules.

‰ Approved plans to surplus the old computer at town hall.

‰ Heard from Victoria Meadows, who discussed the need for more foster family volunteers in the Cullman area.
