More nutritious baby food


CULLMAN — Lovely Lentil Mash

(10 months and older)

Makes 4 baby servings, 1/4 cup each

1/2 c. cooked brown lentils

1 small well-scrubbed, unpeeled potato, steamed, cooled and cubed

4 baby carrots, sliced and steamed

1 small stalk celery, sliced and steamed

1 T. unsalted butter, softened

Place the prepared lentils, potato, carrots, and celery in a bowl. Add the butter and mash with a fork. Serve lukewarm.

Refrigerate cooled purée in an airtight container for up to 3 days, or fill ice-cube trays or other containers to freeze for up to 3 months.


Sunshine Squash and Pineapple Purée

(11 months and older)

1 medium yellow squash, thoroughly washed

2 c. fresh pineapple chunks

Breast milk, formula or water (to thin, as needed)

Wash and trim the ends of the squash. Cut in half lengthwise and slice each half into half-inch pieces. Steam until soft; drain.

Place the cooled, drained squash in a blender with the pineapple and purée. Add a small amount of liquid (breast milk, formula or water) a tablespoon at a time, if needed, to reach desired consistency.

Note: This recipe makes enough baby food to fill the size of one standard ice cube tray, give or take a few ounces, depending on the size of the squash and amount of additional liquid added.
