‘You’re the Reason’ display honors cancer victims, survivors, supporters

HANCEVILLE — After several years’ absence from the annual American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Cullman County event, the You’re the Reason slide show display will return for the 2014 event on May 2-3 at the Cullman County Fairgrounds.

“This slide show is something we wanted to bring back to our Relay For Life event because it is so moving to see,” said Helen Allen, one of the event’s organizers. “It gives area residents another opportunity to memorialize, honor or thank someone they know who has been affected by cancer and share photos of those loved ones.”

The You’re the Reason slide show will be displayed on one or two screens at the fairgrounds on the night of Relay and possibly in at least one other location.

A $10 donation is requested for each photo to be included in the slide show, which will be divided into four different categories. Photos can be displayed in the Remembering, Surviving, Fighting and Helping categories.

The Remembering category is to memorialize someone who has passed away and was affected by cancer. Surviving is for those who have won their battle against the disease. Fighting is for those waging the war against cancer, either personally or as a supporter of Relay For Life. Helping is to pay special honor to those family members, friends and even medical personnel who have helped cancer patients in their fight.

A short message can be included to run with the photographs submitted, to share information with viewers about the person or persons in the photograph.

“I remember the first year we did this,” Allen said of You’re the Reason. “It was wonderful to see all of the photos of our loved ones, because it’s for them that we do this. It’s for them that we raise money for the ACS to use for research so that one day we can say we’ve won the battle against cancer.”
