Wallace State Community College will present “Out of Print” by filmmaker Vivienne Roumani as part of the South Arts Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers at the Burrow Center Recital Hall, 7 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 14.
Following a screening of the film, Roumani and the audience will engage in a discussion about the film and her work as a filmmaker. A reception with the filmmaker is scheduled following the film. Admission is free.
In “Out of Print” Roumani sets out to answer the questions: Is the Book Dead? Or is the question even important? Her quest was to find out what it means to individuals, and society, to have the ability to answer nearly any question at lightning speed, anywhere, and at any time.
A riveting debate involving Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos, Authors Guild President and best-selling novelist Scott Turow, and Harvard Librarian Robert Darnton about the questions confronting the word industry sets the backdrop as Roumani tackles the core issues of the future of ideas. “Out of Print” is narrated by Meryl Streep.
Roumani is an independent producer/director based in New York City. She brings to “Out of Print,” a unique perspective gained as a director at the Library of Congress and the UC Berkeley Library, where she led digitization projects. Roumani’s previous documentary, “The Last Jews of Libya,” narrated by Isabella Rossellini, had its U.S. premiere at the 2007 Tribeca Film Festival and was subsequently screened at major festivals and other venues around the world as well as on the Sundance channel.
