The Cullman Times
Nothing is more precious than a newborn baby. The nursery at Cullman Regional Medical Center is a wonderful place to begin life, with trained professionals and a warm and loving atmosphere.
Most babies come into the world with no problem at all. For those little ones who do need special care, there is a state-of-the-art pediatric care center at CRMC.
To provide the best in care for newborns CRMC hosts a bi-annual fundraiser designated specifically for this purpose, with proceeds benefiting the Pediatric and Nursery Services at CRMC.
It began in 1993 when Dr. Eugene Bownes, one of Cullman’s most beloved pediatricians, realized that many of his patients had great musical and theatrical talent. “Dr. Bownes felt that their talent and enthusiasm should be shared with the community, and the idea of the For Kids’ Sake Variety Show was born from his vision,” said CRMC Marketing and Foundation Director, Maria Stanford.
The first For Kids’ Sake Variety Show debuted on April 24, 1993. It featured 19 talented performers.
Then, as now, the Show generates proceeds to benefit nursery and pediatric care at CRMC. “Over the years, this bi-annual talent program has given Cullman area children the opportunity to help other children through their performances and fundraising efforts,” said Stanford.
The Cullman Regional Medical Center Foundation is a non-profit organization that helps to support special CRMC needs. The Foundation manages the Variety Show on behalf of event sponsors, performers, volunteers, and the hospital.
“After Dr. Bownes’ death in 1997, CRMC Foundation Trustees voted unanimously to rename the annual event, changing it to include his name ‘The Bownes Memorial For Kids’ Sake Variety Show’ as tribute to its creator,” Stanford explained.
For Kids’ Sake continues to be a popular event, making a difference for children every day. Since its inception, this youth variety show raised almost $100,000 in funds for CRMC nursery and pediatric care. Its financial support has allowed the Foundation to purchase specialized nursery and pediatric equipment.
Auditions will be held on Thursday, Nov. 15, and Tuesday, Nov. 20, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Col. Cullmann Room at CRMC.
Vocalists, dancers, instrumentalists, and groups/ensembles will be needed for this year’s production.
Audition forms can be picked up at the CRMC Foundation Office in Professional Office Building I. “The forms may also be found on our website at www.crmchospital.com,” said Stanford.
Those wishing to audition should bring a completed entry and audition form to the Col. Cullmann Room at CRMC between 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. on either of the above mentioned dates.
All performers auditioning should remember that the variety show features talent for family entertainment, not for competition. “Please be sure all attire and performances are age appropriate and wear the same outfit or costume for the audition as will be worn in the performance,” stressed For Kids’ Sake committee member, Shirley Quattlebaum.
“All participants should perform the same talent during the audition that they plan to perform at For Kids’ Sake Feb. 16, 2013,” said Quattlebaum. “Participants must bring a queued tape or CD for their respective auditions and performances.”
Quattlebaum asked that participants please notify the Foundation office by Tuesday, Nov. 12, if a keyboard is needed for the audition sessions.
"The For Kids’ Sake Variety Show continues to be both a great opportunity for kids to have the experience of performing before an audience and a successful fundraising event for CRMC," said Stanford. "It's also fun for parents and family members to see their child on stage."
“The CRMC Foundation gratefully acknowledges the support provided by event guests, volunteers, and most-importantly, our performers,” Stanford concluded.
