Samford University’s Leslie S. Wright Fine Arts Center continues its Signature Series by presenting the iconic tap dancer Savion Glover in “Savion Glover’s STePz” Nov. 12 at 7:30 p.m.
“Savion Glover’s STePz” is an exuberant celebration of tap dance to sound and sound to dance, according to Sean Wright, Wright Center director. “Glover and his ensemble of dancers take tap dance to new heights and levels while fusing traditional music selections of the past with his self-proclaimed tap style and energy of the future,” Wright noted. “This production exposes Glover’s capability of all complexities of jazz phrasing, both bass line and melody, the wild improvisations, structures and deconstruction, from departure to return. ‘STePz’ once again displays the infinite versatility and virtuoso of Savion Glover’s genius as a tap master.”
The production played to enthusiastic audiences at the famous Joyce Theatre in New York this summer. The New York Times called it “one Savion Glover show that everyone can enjoy.” The New York Post said “STePz” is “a tight show with some of the most skillful tap you’ll ever see.” Glover himself was described by the Post as “. . . a virtuoso. At 39, he can fill a room with sound while barely moving, or create intricate rhythms without breaking a sweat. You watch and wonder exactly how he does it.”
Glover is a Tony Award-winning hoofer, choreographer and producer. His credits include the Broadway shows “The Tap Dance Kid,” “Black and Blu,e” “Jelly's Last Jam” and “Bring in 'da Noise, Bring in 'da Funk”, and the films “Tap” with Gregory Hines and Sammy Davis Jr.; “Bamboozled” by Spike Lee; and “Happy Feet” as well as its sequel, an Academy Award-winner choreographed by Glover.
The evening’s performance will integrate music and dance in Glover’s inimitable manner. The show features music by John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Prince, Stevie Wonder and Shostakovich.
