The Cullman Community Concert Association gets back to is classical roots in a big way Tuesday, welcoming the Prima Trio to Wallace State Community College for a virtuoso tour of chamber music.
The Prima Trio — comprised of piano, violin and clarinet — has been stunning music audiences since its three members met at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in 2004. The group went on to win their division’s grand prize and gold medal at the 2007 iteration of the Fischoff Chamber Music Competition, the largest event of its kind in the U.S.
The ensemble will perform at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Betty Leeth Haynes Theater on the Wallace State Campus. The public is welcome to attend; tickets at the door are $20 for adults and $10 for students with a valid ID.
Each of the trio’s members has taken a career in fine arts farther than most aspiring young musicians could ever dream. None was born in America, though all came to the U.S. to pursue both their musical educations and their careers.
Russian Pianist Anastasia Dedik graduated from the St. Petersburg Conservatory before moving to the U.S. to continue her training at Oberlin, and, later, at the Juilliard School at Lincoln Center.
Clarinet player Boris Allakhverdyan grew up in Armenia before moving west to become associate principal clarinetist of the Kansas City Symphony in 2009. He continues to perform both in the U.S. and overseas as a soloist, and with orchestras in Russia, Germany, Denmark, Venezuela and Switzerland.
Uzbeki Violinist Gulia Gurevich made her solo debut with the Uzbekistan National Symphony Orchestra at the age of 14, and moved to the U.S. while still a teenager to study at the Interlochen Arts Academy, and later at Indiana University and at Oberlin.
The three became friends while at Oberlin, forming the Prima Trio out of a mutual admiration not only for each musician’s talent, but for their like-minded goal of sharing a wealth of beautiful music with people from every walk of life.
“Everyone who’s been involved in bringing the Prima Trio to Cullman has just been speechless when they’ve heard the music these three extremely talented people can make,” said Community Concert Association board president Kathy Scruggs.
“With the diverse concert lineup that we have offered over the past couple of concert seasons, it’s a treat to feature classical music for our fourth event this year, and I can’t imagine a better group of artists to make the music come alive than the Prima Trio. Honestly, I can’t wait to hear them in person.”
