CULLMAN —
When driving through Cullman and its surrounding areas you may have noticed all the blooming plants, neatly trimmed shrubs and gracefully curving landscapes, making them such attractive elements of the overall beauty of this area.
Landscaping and architecture make an important first impression on visitors to our community and play an integral part in the overall appeal of the city and county.
With this in mind, the Cullman Area Chamber of Commerce awarded the 2012-2013 Beautification Awards recently.
Out-of-county judges were brought in to ensure impartiality. Over 70 businesses, industries, churches, schools and public buildings received certificates for making Cullman and Cullman County a brighter, more interesting and environmentally friendly place to live, work and play.
Participants received scores based on overall design, appropriate use of plant materials, sustainability, maintenance and litter control.
Fabré Painting, whose landscaping design involves a sloping corner lot surrounded by concrete and asphalt, won the Charlie Glover, Best of Show Award for the creative approach used to effectively minimize these challenges.
The Outstanding Contribution to the Community Award for most improvement went to two recipients. The first was The Candle Garden, owners Karen and Greg McCluskey, for the renovation and new landscaping at the historic cottage on the corner of 5th Street S.E. and 2nd Avenue S.E. The second was Today’s Family Dentistry, owner Dr. David Kim, located at 506 1st Ave SE.
The 2012 Beautification Awards Luncheon was sponsored by Verizon. Awards were presented by 2012-2013 Community Improvement Committee Chair, Maic von Thuelen, of Rehau Construction, Bob Hawley committee member and Mike Krassick, who served on the committee.
Cherrie Haney, president of PALS, presented awards to local schools for their participation in the 2012 People Against a Littered State.
The Cullman County Clean Campus Program is designed to involve all city, county and private schools in litter control and beautification projects, which will develop and sustain stewardship and environmental awareness. The program is available at no cost, PALS provides all supporting materials such as large Clean Campus Litter Bags, brochures, School Window Decals, recycling boxes and The PALS Teachers Activity Guide.
