Childhood dream comes true with new book

Sharon Schuler Kreps was born in Hattiesburg, Miss. Her family moved to Cullman when she was a young girl. She attended Sacred Heart, and graduated from Cullman High School in 1990.

Sharon always had dreams of becoming a writer, but was never an ace English student, which discouraged her aspirations for a long while. “I just assumed that I could never make it as a writer since I wasn’t particularly good in English,” she said candidly.

However, since no one has asked her to diagram a sentence since high school and with much encouragement by friends, she put pen to paper and brought her childhood memories to life.

As an adult, she still lives in Alabama along with her family. True to her Southern heritage, she never meets a stranger and enjoys a good laugh, especially at her own expense.

Her book, ‘Jokers & Dandies’ is about growing up in the South — mainly here in Cullman. “It is based on my childhood and is written from a little girl’s point of view,” Sharon explained. “Each chapter is actually a different short story. Naturally I have changed names, and really twisted and fluffed everything up, making it very comical and entertaining.”

The book is filled with familiar Southern scenes and local landmarks, some of which will be instantly recognizable to Cullman County residents. Most people who have spent their lives in this area will find humor and wisdom in Sharon’s reminiscences of life on a farm, or as a beleaguered younger sibling. “I guess you could call this a ‘coming of age’ saga,” she described.

A self-published work of fiction, Jokers & Dandies has been well received by the reading public. The book has received 21 five-star reviews on Amazon. One reviewer writes, “Sharon takes the simple everyday adventures of a little girl and turns them into side splitting comic tales. A great book for every age; a joy to read. Can't wait to read the next book. Keep them coming Sharebear!”
