Two students from East Elementary had the goal of making the community aware about Cullman’s water shortage. Fifth-graders Emily Brown and Ben Ratliff approached East Elementary School Principal David Wiggins about the idea of hosting a water conservation poster contest to challenge children in the area to consider ways to save. The Cullman Utilities Board signed on to help with the cause Ben and Emily started and a month later, more than 100 students from every school in the county had submitted their artwork and ideas about how to make a impact in a community-wide problem.
Winners were selected based on their research and use of visual imagery to present conservation basics.
The poster winners each won ice-cream parties for their whole classes.
