CULLMAN —
Dripping Springs Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution recently recognized eight area high school seniors as DAR Good Citizens: Ashlyn Calvert, Cold Springs; John Weeks, Cullman; Megan Walker, Fairview; Peyton Presto, Good Hope; Jay Napoles, Hanceville; Hannah Hopkins, Holly Pond; John Schneider, St. Bernard Preparatory; and Cameron Brock, West Point.
The students are selected by their schools for this honor on a basis of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism. Each student submits a copy of his/her transcript, list of school, extracurricular, and community activities, and an explanation of how they try to exhibit the traits of a good citizen. They are then given a subject dealing with history and patriotism and asked to write an impromptu essay in a span of two hours using no reference materials. These essays are then judged by three non-DAR judges along with the accompanying material. The most outstanding essay is then submitted to DAR district and state levels for further competition. Peyton Presto was chosen to represent Dripping Springs Chapter and was awarded a check for $100.
Representatives, their parents and other family members were honored with a reception following the meeting. Cullman Chapter Sons of the American Revolution assisted with the reception.
