Memorial Day 2012

CULLMAN — Cullman veterans organizations were busy over the Memorial Day weekend. Members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2214-Cullman decorated Highway 31 with 225 American flags in honor of those who gave their lives for our freedom. On Saturday morning, the American Legion hosted a ceremony at Veterans Park at Sportsman Lake Park, where speakers paid tribute to our fallen.

Saturday afternoon, as the temperature rose to 94º, VFW members and Scout Troop 31-Cullman decorated some 500 veterans graves in the Cullman City Cemetery. Each grave received its own American flag. George Mann, a World War II veteran and double purple heart recipient, who is in his 80s, braved the heat to drive a golf cart to deliver ice water to his fellow veterans. Steve Larson, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam war and himself a double purple heart recipient, spoke of how proud he was to honor the many veterans of our many wars that are buried here in Cullman. Grandchildren and Boy Scouts who were present to assist the “old guys” learned a valuable lesson in patriotism.

A special thanks goes out to all of our current and past veterans who served this country, and also to those who were undeterred by the heat who stepped up to honor their band of brothers.
