CULLMAN — Each year, the Cullman VFW Post 2214 recognizes a local teacher, law enforcement officer, emergency medical technician, and firefighter for the year. Those chosen, along with family, are invited to a dinner/awards ceremony. Additionally, the veterans sponsor a Patriot's Pen essay contest for area middle school students and Voice of Democracy patriotic contest for area high school students. The Veterans of Foreign Wars are proud to recognize these outstanding members of our community both for their service and for their love of country.

Winners are Anthony McGraw, Hanceville Middle School, first-place winner Patriots Pen; Tiffany Bell, Hanceville High School, first-place winner Voice of Democracy; Dustin Womack, Good Hope High School, second-place winner Voice of Democracy; Katie Owens, Hanceville High School, third-place winner Voice of Democracy; Chris Cornett, Fire Fighter and EMT of the Year, Hanceville Fire Department; CPT Robert John Schweighart, Special Recognition for 30 years of dedicated service, Cullman County Sheriff’s Office; Van Hutchins, VFW Post 2214 Veteran of the Year; Mary Jo Lakin, Teacher of the Year, Music Teacher, Hanceville Elementary; Officer Christopher Nichols, Law Enforcement Officer of the Year, Cullman Police Department.
