CULLMAN — University of Alabama McNair Scholars Conference Features Cullman Native

On Oct. 18, the 13th annual University of Alabama McNair Scholars Research Conference featured original research conducted during the summer, 2012 by McNair Scholar Joshua Moncrief, native of Cullman. Josh presented a project conducted under the direction of UA faculty member Dr. Mark Lanier, professor and department head of Criminal Justice. In July, Josh presented an initial report of his project, a study of attitudes of correctional officers in Tuscaloosa, at a national McNair undergraduate research conference hosted by the University at Buffalo, State University of New York. One of only 12 UA students selected campus-wide to comprise the 2012 cohort of McNair Scholars, Josh is currently completing his undergraduate studies with a major in Criminal Justice and applying for graduate study in the fields of criminal justice and sociology.

The Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program, or McNair Scholars, is a TRIO program of the U. S. Department of Education named for the late physicist and astronaut Ron McNair. Born into poverty in South Carolina, Dr. McNair was a first-generation college student who earned his Ph.D. in physics at MIT; the second African American to fly in space, he perished in the Challenger accident on Jan. 28, 1986, which claimed the lives of the entire crew. The McNair Scholars Program’s mission is to help talented undergraduates who are first-generation college students in financial need and/or members of groups historically underrepresented in graduate studies to prepare for doctoral study.
