Wallace State Community College’s Polysomnographic Technology program was recently recognized with voluntary accreditation by the Commission of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).
Standards for the accreditation are established by CAAHEP, the American Association of Sleep Technologists (AAST), the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) and the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT).
Wallace State fully is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. Many Wallace State programs have earned additional voluntary programmatic accreditation, when available, as an additional indicator of excellence.
Wallace State is consistently ranked among the top 50 colleges in the nation for its programs related to Health Professions and Related Clinical Sciences according to Community College Week.
The Polysomnography certificate program trains polysomnographic technologists, more commonly known as sleep lab technicians or sleep technologists, to perform diagnostics of sleep cycles and behavior, usually done overnight in a sleep center. The study involves the use of non-invasive monitoring equipment. The technologist observes a person at sleep while continuously charting brain waves, muscle activity, breathing, eye movements and heart rhythms. Polysomnograpic technologists work with physicians to provide comprehensive clinical evaluations for the diagnosis of sleep disorders. They also provide supportive services related to the ongoing treatment of sleep-related problems.
