Wallace State’s Respiratory Therapy Program to host 'STOPTOBER' COPD awareness day on Thursday, Oct. 25

HANCEVILLE — The Wallace State Respiratory Therapy Program has declared October as “STOPTOBER” to promote smoking cessation and lung health.

On October 25, the program will host a COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) awareness day, and free COPD screenings will be offered from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at the Tom Bevill Allied Health Building.

According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health, common signs and symptoms of COPD include: An ongoing cough or a cough that produces a lot of mucus (often called "smoker's cough"); shortness of breath, especially with physical activity; wheezing (a whistling or squeaky sound when you breathe); and chest tightness. Those with COPD may also have colds or the flu often. However, not everyone who has these symptoms has COPD, and not everyone who has COPD has these symptoms.

Free tips on how to quit smoking and other lung-health related pamphlets are available throughout the month in the lobby of the Bevill building.

Wallace State is a smoke-free campus and is celebrating a Year of the Healthy Campus with various activities to promote health and wellness, including a walking challenge that wraps up this month.

The Respiratory Therapy events are sponsored by students in the program’s Lambda Beta Chapter.
