CULLMAN —
Members of the newly-formed Alumni Association of Sacred Heart School sponsored an open house recently as part of their church's centennial celebration of the laying of the cornerstone of the present church building in downtown Cullman. Everyone was invited to revisit the school which has offered education for area youth for the past 135 years.
Former students, principals and teachers, parents and grandparents of current students and community members all turned out for a joyful afternoon of celebrating, reminiscing and perusing “old” pictures which had been “resurrected” for the occasion. The picture board, with photos dating back to the early 1920s, was the most popular site during the afternoon, as folks sought to find their pictures and those of their friends and relatives.
Visits to classrooms with current teachers and students interacting with the attendees was an entertaining time for all. Each classroom and the hallways were decorated with students' work and awards won in past competitions.
Student tour leaders sported their new uniforms which make their official appearance in January when school resumes after the holidays. Many of the visitors talked with the youngsters telling them of their days spent, not in the current school, but in the former wooden structure which graced the location in the early decades of the past century.
A reception followed the visitation, with classmates catching up on the years since they had last been together. Several had their school rings from the class of 1954, while others had additional mementoes from days gone by to share. Stories were swapped, a few “tall tales” probably, as well, and everyone grew younger as the day progressed!
Following the afternoon's events, everyone attended Saturday evening mass in the church. Both Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church and school were declared historical landmarks by Gov. George C. Wallace in the 1970s. At the present time, the church, school and Family Life Center occupy an entire city block in the downtown area. The church's twin spires topped with gold crosses grace the landscape of Cullman, most especially now that so many of the city's 100-year-old trees were destroyed by the April 27, 2011, tornadoes which swept through the state.

Wallace State Community Education Courses beginning May 21
Computers for seniors
This course is for the beginner and is designed to introduce you to the computer. Basic functions of Microsoft Windows will be covered along with adjusting personal computer settings. You will also be introduced to the Internet and email. The instructor is skilled at teaching those with little or no experience with computers.
Classes are May 21, 28 and June 4 from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Class is limited to 12 students. Fee-$25. To register, call 256352-7826.

Diagnostic Imaging, Respiratory Therapy programs hold pinning ceremonies
Wallace State Community College bestowed more than 20 students with a pin signifying their success in completing an Associate Degree in Science in the Diagnostic Imaging program. The pinning ceremony was held Thursday, May 2, for the 24 students who completed the program that affords them the opportunity to work as x-ray technologists in hospitals, clinics and physician’s offices.
