Sacred Heart School
Ten fifth- and sixth graders banded together in a successful journey these past three months to unite as Sacred Heart School's newest math teams. Under the direction of new instructor Helen Gavitt Lewis, who joined the faculty in January, the students took their math learning seriously, fielding the first competitive team the school has had in over 10 years.
At the recent Cullman Middle School Math Tournament the fifth grade placed fourth overall in the small school division. They were limited in their ability to take part in additional tournaments due to the late start in the school year, but plans are to hit the ground running next year and make their mark in the math field.
"Their hard work paid off this year and now they have a taste for what competition is like and they are ready and able to aim even higher next year," said Mrs. Lewis, herself a former student of Sacred Heart School.
