Wallace State students Lowrey, Eads finish 3rd nationally at SkillsUSA Conference

Students receive letter of recognition from Governor Bentley

HANCEVILLE — Wallace State Community College-Hanceville students Mark Lowrey and Walter Eads each finished third in the nation in their respective competitions at the 48th annual SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference in Kansas City, Mo., during the last week of June and garnered recognition from Governor Robert Bentley upon returning home.

“Your achievement reminds me that our young people are our future and I encourage you to continue your education, set your goals and make service to this state and nation a priority in your life. You represent the best hope we hold for a bright and shining future for Alabama,” Bentley said in a letter dated July 5, to both students.

Lowrey and Eads each are students in the Wallace State Machine Tool Technology/Computer Numerical Control Department. At SkillsUSA, Lowrey, 28, participated in the Precision Machining competition, while Eads, 23, finished third in the CNC Milling contest.

Lowrey and Eads achieved the best finishes for Wallace State students at SkillsUSA since Joey Foster was a welding national champion in 2009.

Other Wallace State students competing at SkillsUSA last month were Deolindo Cabrera in Related Technical Math and Joshua Smith in Architectural Drafting. Amanda Smith, a drafting student, was also on hand as an Alabama Postsecondary Officer, attending conferences and learning ways to help promote technical programs across the United States. All four national competitors were Alabama students.

“I am very proud of each of these students. The whole trip was an amazing experience for me and the students. The part that impressed me most was the attitude and action of our students. They presented themselves very professionally, paying great attention to their responsibility as representatives of Wallace State,” said Wallace State Machining/CNC Instructor Jonathan Minyard, who accompanied the students to Kansas City, Mo. “They were very courteous and respectful, and showed great concern for those around them.  They are certainly worthy of our appreciation and respect.”

SkillsUSA is a national nonprofit organization serving teachers and high school and college students who are preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations, including health occupations. SkillsUSA serves more than 300,000 students and instructors annually. The organization has 13,000 school chapters in 54 state and territorial associations.
