Cold Springs High School

After reading “The Shoes of the Dead” and “A Wagon of Shoes” by a Holocaust Poet - Abraham Sutzkever, students were asked to write a poem in their own words.

Dead Shoes

Thousand of shoes lay on the street,

Still no news of the belonging feet.

Battered and covered in dirt,

Broken and sullen, I feel the hurt.

Shoes of children and women,

Alas' my heart breaks to say.

Let the Heavens shine upon them,

That they might live to see one more day.

Beaten and tossed into a deathly chamber,

The grounds are stalked by a German Ranger.

Barbed wire fences enclose the place,

And the German spit on them in disgrace.

The shoes pile higher, without explanation,

Jews within' the ghetto cried.

These rumored shoes spread across plantation,

For the feet who once filled those shoes have sadly, died.
