Escaping shadows of the past

Accusations that the Hanceville head football coach used racist language in addressing several team members is sad news for everyone concerned.

While the accusations against Danny Miller are allegations, not fact, at this point, the matter has been turned over to county school officials to investigate. The coach has not commented on the matter and led his team to an important victory in Friday’s football game. Several parents have already commented on the matter and are looking for the matter to be addressed by school officials.

A lot still needs to be revealed about the allegations before any conclusions can be reached. Superintendent Billy Coleman said facts in the case are the most important in reaching a decision concerning the allegations. Coleman is certainly right in his approach to the issue.

The number of accusations directed at Miller raises concern for parents, students and teachers. Education systems are dependent on earning and maintaining the trust of parents. Issues involving the conduct of students and teachers must be addressed carefully and with fairness in mind.

The disturbing stories of late involving the Boy Scouts and Penn State’s former assistant coach, Jerry Sandusky, has many people on edge about the welfare of their children. While Miller is not accused of anything in the depth of those issues, the accusations of racism are nonetheless serious.

American society, particularly in the South, has been through many troubling years because of racism and unfair laws. While racism should be a matter of history at this point, there is no doubt that the insensitivity at the root of racism remains alive.

Leaving the sinister shadows of the South’s past has been difficult. From the Civil War to the Civil Rights Movement, many people have suffered and sacrificed for the cause of justice and equality.

Let’s hope that the issue involving Hanceville’s football coach can be resolved with fairness and dignity, clearing the way for greater respect and sensitivity for everyone.
